Doug Lebda, the founder and CEO of LendingTree, passed away tragically in an ATV accident at the age of 55. Lebda’s journey began in 1996 when he launched LendingTree—initially called CreditSource USA—after his own frustrating experience trying to navigate the mortgage process.
LendingTree revolutionized the way consumers connect with lenders, currently operating a network of 300 lenders that offer mortgages and personal loans. While the company itself doesn’t issue loans, it serves as a crucial platform for users to compare rates, making the loan-shopping experience significantly more transparent and accessible.
Just weeks before his untimely death, Lebda shared his entrepreneurial insights on the finance and real estate podcast “The Deal Ranch,” hosted by Matt Lutz. In the conversation, Lebda provided valuable advice for aspiring business founders, emphasizing the importance of maximizing moments of personal inconvenience—what he called “wet feet” moments.
He recounted how his experience while working for PwC became the catalyst for LendingTree. Faced with the cumbersome process of comparing mortgage rates by physically visiting banks, he wondered why such an inconvenient system existed in stark contrast to the automated trading systems available for financial instruments. This realization sparked his entrepreneurial vision for an easier way to compare mortgage rates.
Lebda also highlighted the significance of validating business ideas in a cost-effective manner. During his time in business school in the late ’90s, he spent a mere $500 on Yahoo ads to gauge interest in his concept. The overwhelming response from potential customers—many willing to provide personal details for credit assessments—helped him establish a model for customer acquisition.
Furthermore, he emphasized the value of collaboration, particularly the necessity of pairing non-technical founders with strong technical partners. Lebda brought in cofounder Jamey Bennett and CTO Rick Stiegler, both of whom had extensive experience in their respective fields. This partnership proved vital for the success of a tech-driven business like LendingTree.
Lebda also advocated for the automation of mundane tasks, encouraging his team to leverage AI to streamline processes. He mentioned initiatives like “Doug’s daily digest,” where AI tools, including ChatGPT, help filter essential communication, allowing employees to focus on more engaging aspects of their work.
