KENOSHA — Eli Lilly’s ambitious $3 billion expansion of its manufacturing operations in Pleasant Prairie is set to significantly impact the local economy, marking a pivotal development as the company’s largest footprint outside Indiana. The expansion is anticipated to generate 750 new high-skill jobs, underscoring the importance of this project to the region.
Local economic leaders recognize the significance of this milestone, which has already garnered national attention. Nicole Ryf, a representative of the Kenosha Area Business Alliance, emphasizes that the presence of a major player like Eli Lilly is a powerful endorsement for Kenosha County. “When you have a company like Lilly come here, they’re validating Kenosha County as a place to do business,” Ryf stated. This validation is likely to attract further investment, serving as a catalyst for the area’s economic growth.
The positive momentum from Eli Lilly’s expansion is already palpable, according to Ryf. As larger employers move into the area, they not only create robust job opportunities but also stimulate local spending. This economic cycle has fostered new small-business growth across the county, building a sustainable community ecosystem. However, Ryf also points out a pressing challenge: the region is experiencing a housing shortage that must be addressed to accommodate the influx of new jobs.
At CAJE Dee-Zigns in downtown Kenosha, owner Lee Drane reflects on the evolving landscape he’s witnessed over the past 25 years. Drane notes a palpable difference with this latest economic boom, attributing changes to the presence of significant companies like Amazon and Haribo, as well as Kenosha’s advantageous location between Milwaukee and Chicago. “Kenosha’s just got a very nice vibe in general,” he remarked.
Tyler Whetstone, another local resident, echoed Drane’s observations, stating, “We definitely see more activity, and we see the downtown get built up.” Residents are increasingly enthusiastic about future prospects for the area, with many expressing optimism for the continued growth of the local economy.
Ryf explains that as major companies establish themselves in Kenosha County, residents can expect additional benefits, including greater job opportunities, lower tax burdens, and enhanced retail and dining options. “You’ve got that ecosystem,” she noted, adding that these developments contribute to keeping taxes low while providing job opportunities for local youth.
The commitment from Eli Lilly to invest in Kenosha County is viewed as a pivotal factor in the region’s emergence as one of Wisconsin’s fastest-growing corridors. Analysts predict further growth in advanced manufacturing and an uptick in small business openings throughout the downtown area.
