Two significant Ethereum layer-2 networks, Linea and Polygon, encountered operational challenges on September 10, stirring apprehension regarding the reliability of scaling solutions on the blockchain. These incidents coincided closely with a recent four-hour outage experienced by Starknet, another layer-2 network, highlighting ongoing issues with maintaining consistent uptime in rollup systems.
Linea’s Operational Setback
Linea, a layer-2 network developed by Consensys, has since resumed normal operations following a nearly hour-long interruption in block production. Records from Lineascan indicate a 46-minute gap between blocks 23,144,386 and 23,145,387. The disruption stemmed from diminished performance within the mainnet sequencer, which halted activity for over 40 minutes. While the development team has yet to provide a formal explanation, Linea’s public status tracker now indicates that all systems are operational.
The timing of the outage raised eyebrows, as it occurred just hours before Linea’s token airdrop. The project had announced last week that the claim window for LINEA tokens would open imminently. This heightened anticipation has unfortunately drawn the attention of malicious actors, with several community members falling victim to phishing scams recently. In response, Linea issued a warning to users, urging them to exercise caution.
Despite these disruptions, community interest in Linea appears resilient. Data from L2Beat reveals that the total value secured within the network has surged by over 20% in the past week, reaching approximately $1.7 billion.
Polygon’s Delay in Finality
In a separate incident, Polygon’s Foundation reported a “temporary delay in finality.” On the social platform X, the Foundation communicated that while the chain continues to function and produce blocks and checkpoints, users might experience delays of 10 to 15 minutes in finality due to a milestone issue. The status page confirmed that this problem originated from a bug affecting its Bor and Erigon nodes, which, in turn, impacted some Remote Procedure Call (RPC) services.
However, the Foundation conveyed that a fix has been identified and deployed across the validator network, restoring confidence in the network’s stability.
As both Linea and Polygon grapple with these operational setbacks, stakeholders are left reflecting on the evolving challenges within the Ethereum layer-2 landscape. The series of outages not only underscores the necessity for technical improvements in network reliability but also highlights the vulnerability of these systems to external threats amid the excitement surrounding token launches.
