Ethereum developers have announced the impending retirement of the Holešky testnet, marking a significant transition in the blockchain’s testing framework. The shutdown will occur two weeks after the upcoming Fusaka upgrade is finalized. According to an announcement by the Ethereum Foundation, Holešky has “reached its planned end-of-life date” and will no longer be supported by client, testing, or infrastructure teams post-Fusaka.
Established in 2023, Holešky served as a vital platform for testing staking infrastructure and validator operations. It played a critical role in evaluating major upgrades like Dencun and Pectra. However, following issues such as validator inactivity and exit queues that emerged after the Pectra upgrade in early 2025, the Ethereum Foundation sought a more reliable environment for testing.
As a result, the testing operations were migrated to the newer Hoodi testnet in March. Hoodi was chosen for its cleaner and more stable infrastructure, aimed at improving the Ethereum network’s overall robustness. Currently, Ethereum’s testnet ecosystem consists of three distinct networks: Sepolia, which supports decentralized applications (DApps) and smart contracts; Hoodi, focused on staking and validator-related testing; and Ephemery, designed for transient testing without the concerns related to state persistence found in longer-running testnets.
The end of Holešky represents not just a phase-out of an older infrastructure but also emphasizes Ethereum’s commitment to continually improving its testing capabilities for future updates and enhancements.
