In a captivating blend of action and deep scientific concepts, Exodus, a forthcoming action role-playing game from Archetype Entertainment, has announced an “early 2027” release window following its impressive reveal at the 2025 Game Awards. The studio, which is a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast and comprises former BioWare talent, aims to redefine the genre with its exploration of hard science fiction.
The trailer, featuring a striking performance by Matthew McConaughey, drew immediate comparisons to iconic franchises such as The Expanse and Mass Effect, especially in its depiction of advanced technology and space travel. This ambitious project challenges players to engage with complex themes while ensuring the gameplay remains exhilarating and captivating.
At the narrative’s heart is the concept of time dilation, a principle from Einstein’s theory of special relativity that suggests time moves slower for objects traveling at high speeds. In the universe of Exodus, humans venture from Earth in the 23rd century to the Centauri Cluster, located around 16,000 light years away. However, due to time dilation, different humans arrive at varying times, creating a complex societal divide.
The earliest arrivals have undergone significant genetic modifications, evolving into a new faction referred to as the “Celestials.” These beings have transformed to such an extent that they are perceived as nearly alien by later human arrivals, who they regard as primitive and inferior. Drew Karpyshyn, the game’s narrative director, articulated the Celestials’ perspective, highlighting their alien-like evolution and the challenges they pose to the newly arrived humans. “They have motivations we don’t really understand,” he explained, adding that they may perceive humans as either nuisances or threats.
Players will inhabit the role of Jun, a “Traveler” tasked with executing missions across the cluster. Because these missions can involve traveling at near light speed, Juniors may return to find that decades have passed back home, leading to profound personal consequences. Relationships may have shifted, and familiar places may no longer exist.
This dynamic will not always demand constant decision-making; however, significant choices will come into play at key moments in the narrative. Chris King, the game director, emphasizes a “choices and consequences loop,” where players will make decisions that ripple through their missions, particularly during pivotal “Exodus” missions. These events, driven by time dilation, will lead to unforeseen developments among companions.
So far, two companions have been introduced, with teasers hinting at more to come. While the precise number of potential endings remains undisclosed, the expansive lore established through novels and tabletop materials suggests a rich tapestry of narrative outcomes is on the horizon.
In addition to intense combat and visceral action, Exodus will offer players the opportunity to delve deeper into its world, promising an extensive codex to explore the universe’s intricacies. The game is set for release on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, and there is anticipation as it aims to carve a unique niche within the sci-fi gaming landscape.
