A memorial ceremony is set to take place at the Gold Star Memorial in Chicago to honor fallen police officer Krystal Rivera. Her name will be enshrined on the memorial wall, which serves as a tribute to the brave individuals who have lost their lives while serving the community. The ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Officer Rivera tragically lost her life in June due to a friendly fire incident involving a fellow officer during a suspect chase in the Chatham neighborhood. As the community gathers to pay their respects, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation will also conduct a candlelight vigil later in the evening, during which the names of 607 fallen police officers will be read aloud.
In connection to the incident leading to Officer Rivera’s death, the officer who mistakenly shot her has been relieved of his police powers and is currently under investigation for assault. This officer was involved in a separate incident in which he allegedly assaulted a female off-duty officer outside a bar in Wicker Park. He maintains that he was the victim in this altercation.
As the community mourns the loss of Officer Rivera, her legacy will be forever commemorated on the memorial wall, reminding all of the sacrifices made by those who serve on the front lines of law enforcement.
