In a thrilling encounter during the quarterfinals of the Copa Intercontinental, Flamengo and Cruz Azul played to a 1-1 draw, a match referred to as the “Derbi de las Américas.” The game took place in Qatar, marking the first significant match of the tournament’s second edition this year.
Flamengo, fresh off their Copa Libertadores victory just ten days prior, faced off against Cruz Azul, the champions of the Concacaf. The stakes were high, as the winner would advance to face Pyramids FC from Egypt, setting the stage for a clash against Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
The match commenced with a balanced pace, but the first clear opportunity came from Argentine Rodolfo Rotondi. The former player of Newell’s and Defensa y Justicia made a forceful entry into the box from the left side in the 13th minute, but his shot narrowly missed the first post.
Just two minutes later, another Argentine, Gonzalo Piovi, attempted to clear the ball within Flamengo’s penalty area but committed a critical error by passing it toward the middle, gifting the opportunity to Giorgian de Arrascaeta. The Uruguayan, with a history at Defensor in his home country, skillfully maneuvered past Mexican goalkeeper Andrés Gudiño and executed a comfortable finish into the net, putting Flamengo ahead 1-0.
Flamengo continued to press their advantage, and by the 20th minute, Rotondi had another chance, firing a left-footed shot that also went wide of Agustín Rossi’s post. With Flamengo controlling possession and pushing for a second goal, it appeared as though they were in a commanding position. However, just before halftime, Jorge Sánchez of Cruz Azul stunned the Flamengo defense and fans alike. In the 44th minute, Sánchez unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that leveled the match at 1-1.
Flamengo returned to the pitch with a large ego following their recent success, having secured the Copa Libertadores title after defeating Palmeiras on November 29 in Lima. The team had also recently claimed the Brazilian Serie A championship. Their last encounter prior to this match resulted in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Mirassol. On the other hand, Cruz Azul entered this match after a 1-1 draw with Tigres in their last outing, which unfortunately led to their elimination in the semifinals of Liga MX.
As the match concluded in a draw, both teams showcased resilience, setting the stage for an exciting return fixture that will ultimately determine who advances in the competition.
