Rochester, N.Y. is enduring an extraordinarily cold start to December, with temperatures significantly below historical norms. The area’s weather has seen an unprecedented drop, with local temperatures recorded over 10 degrees lower than typical for this time of year.
In just the first nine days of the month, residents have experienced single-digit lows on four occasions. Sub-zero temperatures have also been reported in many regions to the south of Rochester at least twice. Currently, the average temperature for December stands at a chilly 23.1 degrees, with every day so far falling below the expected norms. Experts indicate that this December is likely to join the ranks of the top-10 coldest Decembers recorded in local history, should this trend continue.
Looking ahead, the weather patterns are expected to remain unseasonably cold across the area for the next two weeks. Residents may wonder if this frigid air will bring snow. The forecast indicates some light snowfall, although significant snow events do not seem likely for Rochester in the immediate future.
As of now, a winter weather advisory has been issued for areas west of Rochester, effective from 7 PM Tuesday until 10 AM Wednesday. Anticipated snow amounts in these regions may reach between 2 to 4 inches, while snowfall closer to the city could yield around an inch by Wednesday evening. Much of the snow is expected to arrive after midnight, coinciding with the morning commute on Wednesday, necessitating caution for travelers.
An additional threat for snow exists from late Wednesday through late Friday, with Wayne County under a winter storm watch during this period. Wind patterns are expected to shift towards the northwest following a cold front, which may instigate lake effect snow off Lake Ontario. While it is too early to make precise predictions about potential snow accumulation, some communities located east of Rochester should be prepared for significant snowfall later in the week.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the rapidly changing weather conditions, and local forecasts can also be accessed through the 13WHAM Weather App.
