A notable shift in the Golden State Warriors’ rotation has emerged following the return of De’Anthony Melton, significantly impacting Gary Payton II’s role on the team. Payton, who had recently been showcasing improved performance, now finds himself relegated as Melton reclaims his position as a key contributor.
Payton previously made headlines with a standout performance against the New Orleans Pelicans, where he recorded 19 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists on an impressive 9-of-14 shooting. He followed that up with a solid outing against the Oklahoma City Thunder, contributing 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists over nearly 27 minutes of play. These efforts suggested that Payton was beginning to solidify his spot within the lineup.
However, the dynamics shifted drastically when Melton returned from a lengthy absence due to a knee injury sustained in Philadelphia. His first game back saw minimal minutes for Payton, who logged just over three minutes on the court. Although Payton managed to bounce back with increased playing time in a surprising victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, this was contingent on Melton resting for that particular back-to-back matchup.
In the latest game against the Chicago Bulls, Payton saw a stark decline in his playing time, totaling just over four minutes and not appearing at all in the second half. This serves as a clear indicator of the trend emerging with Payton’s minutes in relation to Melton’s presence on the roster. While Melton has demonstrated his capability by averaging 13.5 points, 2.0 assists, and 2.0 steals while shooting 45% from the field in his two games back, this puts him ahead of Payton in the rotation, forcing the latter into an uncertain position as the team prepares for the anticipated return of Stephen Curry.
With an influx of guard options now available and Payton’s role diminishing, it seems likely he may see more “Did Not Play” designations moving forward. Coach Steve Kerr and the Warriors will need to navigate these challenges as they work to finalize their rotation amidst a return to full health.
