Gian Piero Gasperini, the head coach of Roma, has expressed his concerns regarding Evan Ferguson’s performance and attitude, emphasizing the need for improvement as the young striker faces a challenging start to the season. The Republic of Ireland international has struggled significantly, netting only one goal in 14 appearances across all competitions. His lack of impact has led to speculation that his loan spell from Brighton might be ended prematurely in January.
Despite Ferguson being a focal point in some discussions, Gasperini has preferred to employ Paulo Dybala and Tommaso Baldanzi in a false nine role, particularly during Ferguson’s underwhelming performances. This decision comes even as Artem Dovbyk has been sidelined with injury, highlighting the coach’s active choice not to rely heavily on Ferguson at this critical time.
In a press briefing ahead of Roma’s Europa League matchup against Celtic, Gasperini commented on Ferguson’s situation, stating, “I have nothing against him personally. It’s about the performances. Ferguson had a lot of chances.” He conveyed a sense of urgency regarding Ferguson’s development, indicating that improvements are necessary not only in technical skill but also in attitude on the pitch. He pointed to fellow player Mario Hermoso, noting his role as a strong leader within the team, which Ferguson could strive to emulate.
Meanwhile, Gasperini anticipates the return of Dybala, who had been recovering from flu and managed only a brief appearance during the recent loss to Napoli. The Argentinian forward is expected to start in Glasgow, offering a potential boost to Roma as they aim to enhance their current position in the league, where they find themselves languishing in 15th place. Gasperini revealed that Dybala has resumed training, indicating that the team is gradually regaining its strength as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
