Gators Struggling with Poor 3-Point Shooting and Defensive Discipline After Rough Start to Season

SUNRISE, Fla. – The Florida Gators’ basketball season has not started as expected, with a series of shortcomings casting a shadow over the defending national champions. Notably, their 3-point shooting has been dismal—ranking among the worst in the nation at just 27.3%. Additionally, the Gators have struggled with ball control and defensive discipline, particularly when it comes to over-fouling opponents.

These issues have contributed to UF’s disappointing 5-4 record, marking the poorest start for a defending national champ in over a decade. Head coach Todd Golden remains optimistic about the potential for improvement, referencing a well-known saying from famed football coach Bill Parcells: “You are what your record says you are.”

Looking ahead, the Gators are in desperate need of victories, particularly as they prepare to face George Washington (8-3) in the Orange Bowl Classic at Amerant Arena this Saturday. The team has just exited a challenging stretch of games, where they suffered defeats against top-ranked programs such as Arizona, Texas Christian, Duke, and Connecticut. Each of these contests showcased their potential, but also exposed critical flaws that need addressing.

Golden remarked on the disappointing record, yet also noted the competitiveness of the Gators in those tough matchups. “We’ve competed against really good teams and been in a position to win or play down to the last second,” he explained. He acknowledged the need to focus not only on their shortcomings but also on the positive strides taken in various aspects of the game.

A particularly alarming trend has emerged in the Gators’ performance during the first halves of games against highly ranked opponents. In losses to Arizona, Duke, and Connecticut, the team started strong but faltered significantly in the “second quarter.” The statistics paint a stark picture: the Gators have seen a notable point differential of minus-42 in this critical period across these three games.

Moving forward, Florida will need to address these challenges quickly. After the matchup against George Washington, they will return home for games against Saint Francis, Colgate, and Dartmouth before jumping into the Southeastern Conference schedule with a game at Missouri on January 3.

Key areas for improvement include shooting accuracy, particularly from beyond the arc, where the Gators have historically fared better. Golden emphasized the urgency of production, citing that making just a few more open shots could dramatically change the outcomes of recent games.

Overall, while there are pressing concerns to address, there remains hope for the Gators as they navigate the remainder of their season. The focus now shifts to executing improvements and securing wins in the upcoming matches.
