Gold prices are reaching unprecedented levels, while Bitcoin continues to struggle with resistance around the $100,000 mark. Despite these challenges, both assets are gaining traction in terms of mainstream adoption, particularly through innovative financial products such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that are not only providing exposure to these commodities but are also generating income for investors.
In the current investment climate, characterized by soaring stock prices dominated by a few major tech giants, many investors are seeking alternative assets that do not correlate directly with traditional equity and bond markets. This shift has been prompted by increased volatility in fixed-income securities, which have historically offered stability in a balanced 60-40 portfolio but are now causing unease among investors.
To address this ongoing demand for steady income without solely relying on bonds, financial strategies that incorporate income overlays into non-yielding assets such as gold and Bitcoin are emerging. Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, highlighted the dual purpose these alternatives serve: gold provides a safety net amid market volatility, while Bitcoin presents potential for significant returns. “If you’re looking for diverse ways to get income, then these covered call strategies that are increasingly popular have emerged,” he noted during an appearance on CNBC’s “ETF Edge.”
A significant development in this space was the recent filing by BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager and top ETF provider through its iShares family, for a new bitcoin premium income ETF. Simplify Asset Management has been an early adopter of this income-enhancing approach, offering products like the Simplify Gold Strategy Plus Income ETF and the Simplify Bitcoin Strategy PLUS Income ETF. These funds aim to provide exposure to gold and Bitcoin futures while incorporating options strategies to generate income.
According to Paisley Nardini, managing director and head of multi-asset solutions at Simplify, this approach facilitates the possibility for clients to maintain income potential without sacrificing their investments in traditional bond portfolios. However, the current market for these ETFs remains relatively small when compared to more established traditional funds.
The Simplify Bitcoin Strategy PLUS Income ETF currently manages just over $51 million in assets. In contrast, the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF—its largest holding—boasts around $85 billion. Similarly, the Simplify Gold Strategy Plus Income ETF has about $44 million in assets, compared with traditional gold ETFs like the SPDR Gold Trust, which commands roughly $120 billion.
Other newcomers in this space, like NEOS Investments’ NEOS Gold High Income ETF, also aim to deliver monthly income by integrating exposure to gold and enhanced returns through the sale of covered call options. NEOS Holdings has reported over $115 million in assets under management for this fund.
Experts note that the growing interest in income-generating strategies reflects a broader re-evaluation of portfolio construction among investors. BlackRock’s initiative in launching a bitcoin income ETF signals a commitment to explore new avenues for investment, catering to an evolving market landscape.
While gold has historically been viewed as a safe-haven asset and Bitcoin as a volatile speculative choice, the inclusion of income overlays is transforming their roles to meet investor demand. Although these strategies may limit the performance advantages associated with gold and cap the upside potential of Bitcoin, they are attracting retail investors eager to leverage high yield opportunities.
Rosenbluth emphasized that these new strategies in ETF structures align with the increasing popularity of ETFs as a streamlined investment vehicle. He noted, “It’s a more efficient way of accessing the market, and using ETFs as the vehicle to do so is becoming the norm.” As financial markets evolve, the integration of income strategies into these alternative assets may well redefine the investment landscape.
