Hedera has emerged as a leading sustainable, enterprise-grade public network designed for the decentralized economy, enabling both individuals and businesses to create robust decentralized applications (DApps). This platform offers a solution to some of the longstanding challenges faced by older blockchain technologies, including sluggish performance and instability.
Initially funded through an initial coin offering (ICO) in August 2018, Hedera launched open access to its mainnet in September 2019. During the ICO, investors were able to purchase the native utility token, HBAR, at a highly favorable rate. The HBAR token serves a dual purpose within the Hedera ecosystem: it functions as the fuel for various Hedera services, such as smart contracts, file storage, and regular transactions, while also contributing to the network’s security. Positioned as an alternative to traditional blockchain technology, Hedera aims to excel in speed, efficiency, and security. Unlike older blockchains that often utilize a proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism, and newer ones that have adopted proof-of-stake (PoS), Hedera employs its proprietary PoS model designed to enhance transaction verification efficiency and network security. This innovative system is built upon a unique hashgraph consensus algorithm and is supported by a global enterprise governing body.
Hedera Hashgraph distinguishes itself from conventional blockchains through its use of distributed ledger technology (DLT). Unlike traditional methods, Hedera’s hashgraph algorithm purportedly increases transaction speed, reduces costs, and enhances scalability. The network is designed to cater to high-volume operations, including micropayments, data integrity, and tokenization.
The Hedera ecosystem offers core services, notably the Consensus Service (HCS) and Hedera Token Service (HTS). HCS enables clients to send messages to the network for consensus timestamping and ordering, thereby allowing users to maintain privacy and implement access controls. HTS facilitates token creation and management, enabling seamless tokenization.
As part of its technical framework, Hedera maintains a virtual machine that can execute smart contracts written in the widely-used Solidity programming language. Notably, Hedera’s operation does not strictly resemble traditional blockchains. Instead of discarding transaction branches, its hashgraph structure merges them, employing every branch to reach consensus. This method enhances the reliability and throughput of the system.
A particularly innovative aspect of the network is its Gossip-about-Gossip protocol. Dr. Leemon Baird, the inventor of Hedera, explained that nodes within the system utilize this protocol to randomly transmit information about themselves to other nodes. This fosters connectivity among nodes and culminates in the formation of a complex data structure that includes transaction payloads, timestamps, digital signatures, and preceding hashes.
HBAR serves as the native token that energizes applications on the Hedera platform. It is employed for paying network services, transaction fees, in-app payments, and micropayments. Developers utilize HBAR tokens to facilitate various services, including smart contracts, file storage, and currency exchanges, while also incentivizing network nodes for their contributions.
Furthermore, Hedera Hashgraph operates under a decentralized governance framework. The Governing Council, comprised of representatives from multiple enterprises, makes crucial decisions regarding pricing policy, software updates, and wealth management, thus elevating the platform’s stability and trustworthiness.
