Human Rights Foundation Grants 1 Billion Satoshis to 20 Freedom Tech Projects Worldwide

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has declared a significant expansion of its support for various projects through its Bitcoin Development Fund (BDF), allocating 1.5 billion satoshis in new grants. This latest funding round is aimed at enhancing Bitcoin infrastructure, privacy, and education across the globe. The HRF’s initiative is directed toward open-source developers, researchers, and educational programs focusing on tools that promote financial privacy and protect against censorship.

According to HRF, these grants are particularly crucial for advancing technologies that assist dissidents and human rights advocates operating in authoritarian contexts. The organization estimates that these efforts will ultimately benefit billions of individuals living under restrictive political systems, where access to open financial networks and uncensorable payment methods is often either limited or closely monitored.

The funded projects are set to encompass software development, Bitcoin research, and grassroots educational initiatives spanning various regions, including Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. HRF emphasizes that this initiative aims to bolster Bitcoin’s role as a means of financial liberation, enabling activists, journalists, and non-profit organizations to communicate, organize, and receive global support more securely.

A wide array of projects will receive support from HRF’s grants, including:

  1. Bitcoin Privacy Enhancements: A project led by Bitcoin Core developer Naiyoma focuses on improving P2P privacy to make it more challenging to track nodes across multiple networks. This funding will allow Naiyoma to dedicate his efforts to this vital work, enhancing the security of Bitcoin’s primary software implementations.

  2. JoinMarket-NG: This project seeks to enhance transaction privacy through a new implementation of CoinJoin, utilizing a peer-to-peer liquidity market. HRF’s grant will assist in the development and security audits required for JoinMarket-NG, aimed at improving financial confidentiality.

  3. Banxaas: This local platform, spearheaded by developer Nourou, facilitates currency exchange between the CFA franc and Bitcoin in West Africa without the typical barriers of centralized exchanges. HRF’s funding will propel the app’s mobile development, fostering greater Bitcoin utilization in the region.

  4. ChapSmart: A Bitcoin application enabling Tanzanians to conduct remittances and other financial transactions affordably and instantaneously. HRF’s grant will support its development and outreach efforts, aiming to empower users against rising remittance fees.

  5. Minmo: Designed to facilitate exchanges between fiat currencies and Bitcoin via trusted local agents, avoiding the need for centralized platforms. This grant will help Minmo expand its operational framework in environments where financial oppression is prevalent.

  6. Tando: A payment app that integrates Bitcoin with Kenya’s M-PESA, allowing merchants to receive payments in local currency while offering users greater financial flexibility. HRF’s funding will aid Tando’s geographical expansion and integration processes.

  7. Tapnob: This solution simplifies the process of using Bitcoin for daily transactions by allowing users to buy Bitcoin through local bank transfers. HRF’s support will enhance Tapnob’s outreach and educational resources.

  8. rawBit: An open-source visual editor intended to lower the entry barrier for developers to create Bitcoin applications. The grant will fund the addition of advanced educational modules.

Additional projects include initiatives like BTC Shule in Burundi, the Freedom Tech Activist Atlas, and Yes Bitcoin Haiti, all designed to empower communities and provide essential education on financial sovereignty.

HRF’s array of funding recipients reflects a robust commitment to elevating the capabilities of individuals living under repressive regimes, aiming to create a framework that fosters financial independence and supports human rights globally. In an era where financial oppression is commonplace, the emphasis on Bitcoin’s potential as a tool for liberation resonates powerfully, with HRF leading the charge in providing necessary resources for transformative change.
