A recent wave of layoffs at Meta has left a notable impact on its AI division, with 600 employees being affected, including an Indian woman based in the United States. This development marks a significant reduction in workforce, as announced by the company’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang.

The affected employee, who has been with Meta for less than a year as a research scientist, took to the social media platform X to express her situation and search for new job opportunities. In her message, she shared details about her role, emphasizing her experience in large language models (LLMs) and automated evaluation pipelines. Within moments of her post, she received an outpouring of support and job offers from CEOs and founders of several smaller AI startups.

As a holder of an H-1B visa, the woman highlighted the necessity for visa sponsorship from any potential new employer, adding a layer of urgency to her job search. The H-1B visa permits highly skilled foreign workers to reside and work in the United States, typically for a period of up to three years, with the possibility of extensions.

In her outreach, she mentioned that despite the layoffs, she still had internal visibility at Meta and had a two-month window to secure a new position within the company. She expressed her preference to remain in the Greater Seattle area, reflecting her commitment to both her professional and personal life.

The reaction to her post was swift, with many industry professionals reaching out. Notable responses included Violet Herod, founder of Beauvette, who expressed sympathy and initiated contact. Similarly, Varsh Sridharan from Microsoft encouraged her to direct message him if she found relevant roles within the tech giant. Vincent Weisser, CEO of Prime Intellect, also expressed interest in connecting, highlighting the eagerness of smaller AI startups to tap into talent affected by the layoffs.

This scenario underscores the broader implications of Meta’s restructuring efforts in its AI unit, which has faced criticism for being bloated. As the company continues to streamline its operations, the impact on individual lives becomes increasingly apparent, showcasing the challenges faced by skilled workers navigating a volatile job market. The support from the tech community suggests a willingness to assist those impacted, reflecting the interconnected nature of the industry in adversity.
