In a recent episode of ETF Prime, Roxanna Islam, a senior research analyst at VettaFi, unpacked significant developments in the exchange-traded fund (ETF) landscape, including the dynamics of mining ETFs, cryptocurrency developments, and the implications of newly approved multi-share-class structures. Joined by Nate Geraci, Islam provided insights that could shape the future of ETFS, especially in relation to cryptocurrencies.
One major topic discussed was the approval timelines for crypto ETFs. Historically, the approval process could extend up to 240 days, roughly eight months. However, with recent regulatory adjustments, this timeline may be significantly shortened to just a couple of months. Islam highlighted the potential impact of this shift, describing it as a momentous change that could allow new products to hit the market sooner. “This is a huge difference for the industry,” she noted, emphasizing that quicker approvals could lead to increased satisfaction and engagement from investors, who often face lengthy waits for new offerings. The new framework also streamlines procedures by eliminating the need for exchanges to submit a 19b-4 filing for each individual product.
The conversation also touched upon the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) endorsement of multi-share-class ETF structures, which Islam characterized as “big news.” She explained that this development offers several advantages for investors, including enhanced investment options, increased liquidity, reduced costs, and better tax efficiency.
Turning to the mining sector, Islam analyzed the impressive performance of gold and silver mining ETFs. She attributed their success to rising commodity prices and a heightened demand for safe-haven assets amidst market volatility. Specific figures illustrate this trend, with SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) seeing a 47% increase and $16 billion in inflows. Similarly, the iShares Gold Trust (IAU) has mirrored this positive trajectory, while the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) has experienced a remarkable 60% jump, drawing nearly $2 billion in inflows.
Amrita Nandakumar, president of Vident Asset Management, also contributed valuable insights during the episode, shedding light on new trends among ETF issuers and the vital role of ETF sub-advisors. She likened these sub-advisors to an operational extension of issuers, crucial for navigating the evolving ETF landscape. Nandakumar highlighted that various new players, from hedge funds to family offices, are entering the market, eager to leverage ETFs’ distribution capabilities and tax efficiencies.
Furthermore, she explored innovations aimed at meeting the specific needs of financial advisors, discussing strategies related to income, volatility, and alternative assets. As she examined emerging trends such as 351 exchanges and the aforementioned multi-share-class structures, Nandakumar underscored the need for a balanced regulatory environment. This, she argued, would enable meaningful innovation, ensuring that the burgeoning ETF market remains beneficial for both issuers and investors.
