Itaú Unibanco Holding SA, recognized as Latin America’s largest private bank, has advised its clients to consider allocating between 1% and 3% of their investment portfolios to Bitcoin, with a focus on the year 2026. This recommendation positions Bitcoin not merely as a speculative investment but as a strategic hedge against the potential depreciation of the Brazilian real.
In its recent strategy note, analysts from the São Paulo-based bank highlighted the dual challenges that investors currently face: uncertainty in global prices and fluctuations in the domestic currency. According to Itaú, these economic conditions prompt a reevaluation of traditional portfolio strategies. By suggesting a modest allocation of Bitcoin, the bank aims to enable investors to capture returns that are generally uncorrelated with local economic cycles.
The note argued that Bitcoin is distinct from typical fixed income and equity investments, possessing unique dynamics and potential for returns. Its global and decentralized characteristics allow it to function as a currency hedge against local economic vulnerabilities. Itaú underscored that while Bitcoin may serve as a complementary asset, it should not form the core of an investment strategy. Instead, the bank encourages individual investors to align their cryptocurrency exposure with their personal risk tolerance.
The institution noted the relatively low correlation between Bitcoin and traditional asset classes, suggesting that a 1% to 3% investment in Bitcoin could enhance overall portfolio diversification without significantly increasing risk exposure. Itaú highlighted the importance of maintaining a disciplined investment approach, advocating for a long-term perspective rather than reacting impulsively to short-term market volatility.
The guidance provided by Itaú places the bank in alignment with emerging global standards for cryptocurrency investment, notably narrowing the gap with U.S. financial institutions. Major American banks such as Morgan Stanley and Bank of America have indicated that clients could allocate as much as 4% of their portfolios to the leading digital asset.
For Brazilian investors, the scenario presents unique stakes. With economic cycles becoming shorter and external shocks occurring more frequently, Itaú regards Bitcoin’s “hybrid character” as a significant advantage over traditional asset classes. The bank characterizes the cryptocurrency as both a high-risk investment and a global store of value, suggesting that this dual nature may offer resilience that traditional fixed-income assets can no longer assure.
