In a heartfelt moment that resonated deeply with fans and fellow artists alike, Jelly Roll received an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on December 10. This significant announcement came from renowned country musician Craig Morgan, marking a pivotal moment in Jelly Roll’s career.
Jelly Roll, 41, shared his emotional connection to the Opry, recalling how he attended a performance by Craig Morgan, where he first encountered the profound impact of country music during a challenging period of his life. This experience has come full circle, as he is now invited to become part of the same illustrious community of artists.
On the podcast, Jelly Roll expressed his amazement and gratitude, saying, “It don’t get no bigger in country music, bubba. That’s as big as it gets. F—ing Grand Ole Opry, dawg.” His debut at the Grand Ole Opry took place in November 2021, and he has since expressed his awe at the venue, describing it as a dream realized.
The emotional impact of the announcement was palpable, as Jelly Roll reflected on a past performance at the Opry, referring to it as “the most special night of my life.” As he listened to a clip of his performance, he couldn’t help but recall how Morgan’s song “Almost Home” provided comfort during his time behind bars. Overcome with emotion, Jelly Roll noted, “I didn’t think [I’d] make it,” while holding back tears.
In a pre-taped video, Craig Morgan praised Jelly Roll for making a positive difference in the lives of numerous fans. “I’ll never forget meeting you at the Grand Ole Opry and how much it meant to me to hear you say my music helped you get through some really tough times,” Morgan said. He then formally invited Jelly Roll to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry, calling it an honor to welcome him into the family.
The emotional weight of the moment led Jelly Roll to remove his headphones, bury his face in his hands, and seek a hug from Rogan, stating, “I love you.” He shared a poignant memory of his early days, revealing that attending the Opry to see Craig Morgan perform deeply affected him. “I cried and cried. I just remember thinking, ‘Man, I wanna make people feel the way he makes me feel,'” he recalled, connecting his aspirations as an artist to his personal experiences.
Having performed multiple times at the Grand Ole Opry, Jelly Roll described his initial performance as a transformative experience. He noted that he had “cried like a baby” during his debut, especially as the moment represented the culmination of years of hard work and the realization of his dreams in country music. He expressed how much it meant to him to get on that stage, which, while only 15 minutes away from his home, felt impossibly distant during his youth.
Jelly Roll made a recent return to the Opry stage in September for shows that raised funds for local education initiatives, illustrating his commitment to giving back to the community.
For his induction into the Grand Ole Opry, the organization considers various criteria, including radio success, recorded music sales, touring achievements, and industry recognition, reflecting both past accomplishments and future potential.
Following the release of his latest album, Beautifully Broken, in October 2024, Jelly Roll is set to perform in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve, promising to continue sharing his unique journey through music with fans around the world.
