John Cameron Mitchell Joins Broadway's Oh, Mary! for Limited Engagement

John Cameron Mitchell is set to make a highly anticipated return to Broadway in a limited 12-week engagement of the hit comedy Oh, Mary! at the Lyceum Theatre from February 3 to April 26, 2026. Known for his groundbreaking work on Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Mitchell joins the cast, bringing his own unique flair to the production penned by Cole Escola.

In a statement, Mitchell expressed his excitement about the role, noting, “Cole Escola and Sam Pinkleton are the wild horses that dragged me back to drag and I couldn’t be happier!” He humorously added that he’s embracing the challenge of portraying the “most mature Mary yet,” alluding to his efforts in maintaining a vigorous fitness regimen and refining his comedic timing.

Director Sam Pinkleton celebrated Mitchell’s involvement, describing it as both “delicious and somehow inevitable.” He noted that Mitchell’s contributions to live performance have shaped what audiences come to expect, particularly within the queer community. Pinkleton referred to him as “a queer trailblazer, cultural icon, [and] brilliant actor,” indicating the significant influence Mitchell has had on the art form.

Mitchell’s stint will follow the encore performance of Jinkx Monsoon, who takes over for Jane Krakowski beginning January 8, after Krakowski’s esteemed run as Mary Todd Lincoln. Prior to Monsoon, Hannah Solow is set to take the title role on January 6 and 7. Current cast members supporting Krakowski include Cheyenne Jackson as Mary’s Teacher and John-Andrew Morrison as Mary’s Husband, along with Jenn Harris and Tony Macht, who will continue until February 1, 2026.

Oh, Mary! presents a comedic interpretation of Mary Todd Lincoln, depicting her weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The narrative, described by press notes as “through the lens of an idiot,” portrays Mary as a cabaret-loving wino obsessed with the absurdities that surround her.

Since its debut at Off-Broadway’s Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2024, where it was met with critical acclaim and extended multiple times, the show has broken box-office records on Broadway, making history as the first production in the Lyceum Theatre’s 121-year existence to generate over $1 million in a single week. The production has also received recognition from the Tony Awards, securing two awards in 2025 for Lead Actor in a Play and Director of a Play.

The creative team behind Oh, Mary! includes scenic designer dots, costume designer Holly Pierson, lighting designer Cha See, and sound designers Daniel Kluger and Drew Levy, among others. The production’s casting was managed by Henry Russell Bergstein, with Bryan Bauer and Ryan Patrick Kane overseeing stage management.

Tickets for Oh, Mary! are now available, marking yet another exciting chapter in the ever-evolving landscape of Broadway theater.
