Will Stein is rapidly assembling his coaching staff as he takes the reins as the new head coach at Kentucky. A key focus of this effort involves the appointment of a new defensive coordinator for the Wildcats.
Sources indicate that Kentucky is poised to hire Jay Bateman, the defensive coordinator from Texas A&M. Bateman has established himself as a prominent figure in defensive coaching over the last two decades, having held various key positions at multiple programs, including significant roles in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). He has been at Texas A&M for the past two years, serving under head coach Mike Elko.
During Bateman’s tenure with the Aggies, he has been instrumental in developing one of the premier defenses in college football. This past season, A&M’s defense allowed an average of 21.9 points and 309.8 yards per game. The team notably led the nation in third down conversion rate, ranked among the best in sacks, and finished in the top ten for first down conversion defense and passing yards allowed. These impressive statistics contributed to Texas A&M achieving an 11-1 record, marking one of the most successful seasons in the school’s history and earning them a spot in the College Football Playoff for the first time.
Bateman’s coaching journey also includes roles as the inside linebackers coach at Florida for two seasons, and three seasons as the safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator at North Carolina. He has previously held the position of defensive coordinator at Army and Ball State, in addition to prior coaching stints at smaller programs like Elon, Lehigh, and Richmond. Notably, he also spent time at Siena, where he was the head coach for three years after serving as the defensive coordinator for one year.
Since Will Stein’s hiring on December 2nd as Kentucky’s head coach, he has been focused on building a robust staff to enhance the Wildcats’ performance. This recent move signals a strategic transition for the team as they aim to solidify their defensive strategies moving forward.
Further updates on this development are expected.
