Koa Peat is rapidly establishing himself as a frontrunner for Freshman of the Year, following an impressive start with the top-ranked Arizona Wildcats. Peat’s ascent in NCAA Division I basketball is intertwined with his family’s rich athletic legacy, which he credits for his early success.
As the Wildcats prepare to face San Diego State in Phoenix for the Hall of Fame Series on December 20, Peat expressed excitement about his family’s support. “My coaches, my family, everybody will be down there supporting me,” he shared during a recent Zoom call. With his family’s proximity—only a short drive from Tucson—Peat finds comfort in their presence during games.
Peat’s brother, Keona, a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman for the Arizona football team, has been a constant at home games, and the family’s dedication could mean a big cheering section at the upcoming event in the Mortgage Matchup Center. While all family members hold significance in his journey, it is his mother, Jana, whose culinary contributions are particularly cherished. Known as “Granny’s soup,” her special recipe, rich with potatoes and undisclosed ingredients, has become a source of comfort and energy for him.
On the court, Peat has made a significant impact, averaging 15.9 points per game, but has received some constructive feedback from Coach Tommy Lloyd regarding his rebounding. Currently averaging 5.5 rebounds per game, Peat is still working to enhance this aspect of his game. “It’s just an effort thing, cutting out, making sure I’m boxing out and then going in pursuing the rebounds,” he noted, acknowledging the need for persistence akin to his teammates, Tobe Awaka and Motiejus Krivas.
Peat recognizes the importance of securing defensive rebounds, which could aid in generating fast-break opportunities. As the Wildcats gear up for their fifth matchup against a ranked opponent, they seek to build on Peat’s strong performances. In his four prior games against top-ranked teams, he amassed 71 points, shooting 58.3% from the field, alongside 27 rebounds and 13 assists—showing an ability to shine under pressure.
His debut was especially noteworthy, as he made history by becoming the first player in Big 12 history to score 30 points and provide five assists in his first college game, an achievement that adds to the anticipation surrounding his career.
The Arizona vs. San Diego State game is set for 8:30 p.m. on December 20, with nationwide broadcast coverage on ESPN2, where fans will undoubtedly be eager to see how Peat and the Wildcats continue to develop this season.
