In a remarkable display of talent and determination, former University of Georgia athlete Lynna Irby-Jackson played a pivotal role in securing a gold medal for Team USA in the mixed 4×400-meter relay during the opening day of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan. This event, which marks the continuation of a prestigious athletic tradition, features numerous athletes representing the Red and Black, with a total of 22 former and current team members and coaches in attendance.

Irby-Jackson, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, who previously clinched the NCAA outdoor 400m title for Georgia, ran the crucial second leg of the relay alongside teammates Bryce Deadmon, Jenoah McKiver, and Alexis Holmes. Together, they completed the race with an impressive time of 3:08.80. The mixed 4×400-meter relay is a noteworthy addition to the championships, having made its debut during the 2019 World Championships, and is the only relay event featuring both male and female athletes.

Current Georgia track and field member Dejanea Oakley also competed on this thrilling opening day, running the second leg of Jamaica’s relay team, which finished eighth with a time of 3:13.96 in the initial round.

Athletes from Georgia include Aaliyah Butler (competing in the women’s 400m and 4x400m relay for the U.S.), Oakley (women’s 400m and mixed 4x400m relay for Jamaica), Kelsie Murrell-Ross (women’s shot put for Grenada), Manuela Rotundo (women’s javelin for Uruguay), Maisvorewa Vimbayi (women’s 400m for Zimbabwe), Shaquena Foote (women’s 4x400m relay for Jamaica), Michelle Smith (women’s 400m hurdles for St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands), and Maurice Gleaton (men’s 4x100m relay for the U.S.). The group is rounded out by volunteer assistant Janek Oiglane, competing in decathlon for Estonia.

Several former Bulldogs also continue to shine on the international stage, including Christopher Morales Williams (men’s 400m for Canada), Denzel Comenentia (men’s hammer throw for the Netherlands), Marc Minichello (men’s javelin for the U.S.), Kyle Garland (decathlon for the U.S.), Karel Tilga (decathlon for Estonia), Johannes Erm (decathlon for Estonia), and others from diverse countries.

Caryl Smith Gilbert, the long-time Director of Track & Field at UGA and the head coach of the Team USA women’s team, boasts her first gold alongside Irby-Jackson, solidifying an extraordinary opening chapter to the championships.

The coming days will see a busy schedule for current Bulldogs and alumni, with numerous events lined up, including the women’s hammer throw, men’s 1500m heats, and various rounds for the women’s 400m. Spectators and fans can anticipate several appointments featuring these outstanding athletes.

As the World Athletics Championships unfold, fans can stay updated on the progress of the Georgia competitors through various platforms, ensuring they don’t miss a moment of this thrilling and competitive showcase.
