Matt Campbell, the newly appointed head coach at Penn State, has made significant strides in assembling his coaching staff by bringing key members from his past at Iowa State. This week, Campbell finalized his first major on-field hires, recruiting several former Cyclones to join him in his new endeavor.
Taylor Mouser has been appointed as the offensive coordinator for Penn State, transitioning to this role after serving in a similar capacity at Iowa State for two seasons. The emergence of Mouser in the Penn State football directory was first reported by Penn State On3. Joining him are Ryan Clanton, who will take charge of the offensive line, and Deon Broomfield, who has been designated as the secondary defensive coordinator. This news signals potential changes in the current coaching setup at Penn State, including the expected exits of offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and offensive line coach Phil Trautwein.
Broomfield’s new position raises questions about the future of safeties coach Anthony Poindexter, given the ambiguity surrounding Broomfield’s role. At Iowa State, Broomfield served as both the safeties coach and passing game coordinator.
Mouser has a long-standing relationship with Campbell, having worked alongside him in various capacities since their time together at Toledo in 2015. Over the years, Mouser has held roles such as tight ends coach and a position in the scouting department. As the primary play caller at Iowa State in 2024, Mouser led his team to a respectable national ranking, placing 41st in scoring, 39th in yardage, and 18th in plays of 20-plus yards. However, the following season saw a slight decline, with rankings of 60th in scoring and 63rd in both yardage and explosive plays.
Meanwhile, Clanton has made a notable impact on the Iowa State program since joining Campbell’s staff in 2023. His guidance helped the Cyclones improve their rushing attack from 103rd to 70th, and eventually to 51st nationally over three years. Clanton also contributed to the development of tackle Jalen Travis, who was drafted in the fourth round this year, marking the first offensive lineman selected from Iowa State since 2013.
Broomfield, a former player for the Cyclones, has dedicated the last five seasons to Campbell’s coaching staff. Under his oversight, three safeties received All-Big 12 nominations in 2024. His experience includes a stint as a defensive assistant with the NFL’s Houston Texans and roles at Indiana State, Western Illinois, and Carthage as a cornerbacks coach.
These hires come alongside a few key administrative figures who have made the transition to Penn State with Campbell, including general manager Derek Hoodjer and chief of staff Greg Brabenec, as well as several strength and conditioning staff members. The restructuring of Penn State’s coaching staff is an indication of Campbell’s vision for the program as he embarks on this new chapter in his coaching career.
