HOUSTON – Memorial Hermann Health System and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) have announced a resolution to their contract dispute, restoring in-network access for patients. This agreement, effective immediately, addresses the challenges that arose when many patients found their usual healthcare providers out-of-network starting April 1, leading to increased healthcare costs and uncertainty.
The new deal applies to BCBSTX Commercial and Blue Advantage Marketplace members. BCBSTX confirmed that they have “signed new agreements” with Memorial Hermann, emphasizing that the arrangement ensures members retain access to quality care at reasonable prices. With the agreement in place, all members will once again be able to utilize Memorial Hermann facilities and hospitals without facing out-of-network costs.
The dispute had significant repercussions, with patients needing to reassess their healthcare options, reconsider their doctors, and in some cases, pursue continuity of care alternatives.
Both organizations have encouraged members with questions about their specific plans to contact the number provided on the back of their member ID cards. BCBSTX also directed members to their website for additional information regarding the agreement.
Patients who had previously canceled appointments due to the dispute are advised to reach out to their care team to discuss rescheduling options.
Negotiations had been ongoing for several months, with Memorial Hermann calling the demands from BCBSTX “unreasonable,” warning that the impasse could disrupt continuity of care for patients. Conversely, BCBSTX stated that their goal was to establish an agreement that would keep care affordable for its members. This incident follows a similar contract dispute in 2022 which was resolved after the expiration of an existing agreement, ultimately leading to a multi-year partnership between the two organizations.
