In a significant move for the automotive industry, Mercedes-Benz announced plans to invest $4 billion in its Tuscaloosa County plant by 2030. This investment comes as the company continues to strengthen its foothold in Alabama, a state that has long been a hub for automotive manufacturing.
The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Vance facility, where company officials celebrated a notable production milestone: the completion of 5 million vehicles since the plant opened. This facility is not only the first U.S. plant for Mercedes, established in 1993, but it also marked the launch of the state’s automotive industry when the M-Class SUV was introduced in 1997. Since then, it has positioned itself as a leader in luxury vehicle manufacturing, employing around 5,800 people and contributing over $7 billion in investments to the local economy.
Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) exports approximately 60% of its annual production, delivering Alabama-made luxury vehicles to global markets. During the ceremony, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey highlighted the transformative impact of Mercedes on the state’s landscape and praised the highly skilled local workforce. “Thirty years ago, Mercedes-Benz changed the landscape of Alabama, and there is no doubt that Alabamians have changed the landscape of Mercedes-Benz,” she stated.
The event featured performances from the University of Alabama’s Million Dollar Band, and appearances by notable figures such as former football coach Nick Saban. Ola Kaellenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, who once worked at the Alabama plant, emphasized the deep connection between the automaker and the local community. “These vehicles don’t just carry the Mercedes star. They carry the passion, precision and pride of an entire region,” Kaellenius remarked.
Michael Schiebe, a member of the Board of Management overseeing production and quality, affirmed the craftsmanship of the employees. He expressed that the $4 billion investment underscores the company’s commitment to Tuscaloosa. “We believe in Tuscaloosa. We are staying, we are growing, we are committed,” he assured.
Alabama Department of Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair echoed this sentiment, asserting that Mercedes-Benz serves as a success story for the state, inspiring other companies to invest in Alabama. She noted that the ongoing expansions and new models produced at the facility have exceeded expectations, further solidifying the region’s role in the global automotive industry.
The announcement reflects a strategic move by Mercedes that has laid the groundwork for Alabama’s automotive sector, leading to a constellation of assembly plants from other major players, including Honda, Hyundai, and Mazda-Toyota. Collectively, these facilities contribute to Alabama’s production of over 1 million vehicles annually, placing it among the top states for automotive manufacturing in the U.S.
Currently, the Tuscaloosa facility produces several models, including the GLE, GLS, GLE Coupe, as well as performance variants and electric models like the EQE SUV and EQS SUV. The GLC SUV is also set to join the production lineup in the near future.
Overall, Mercedes-Benz’s forthcoming investment not only signals its ongoing commitment to Alabama but also underscores the state’s pivotal role in the broader automotive landscape across the country.
