Anger erupted among fans during Lionel Messi’s promotional tour in India as chaos ensued at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, where thousands had gathered to witness the football icon. The event, part of Messi’s ‘GOAT tour’, saw fans paying hefty sums of up to 12,000 rupees (approximately $133) for a glimpse of the Argentine superstar. However, frustration mounted quickly when Messi’s appearance was marred by obscurity, as he was surrounded by a sizable entourage of officials and celebrities, making it difficult for many to see him.
The situation escalated after Messi spent only about 20 minutes at the stadium before being escorted away by security, sparking outrage among the crowd. Witnesses reported that some fans ripped up seats and hurled plastic chairs and water bottles onto the pitch as feelings of disappointment turned into anger.
West Bengal’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her dismay regarding the incident, stating that she was “deeply disturbed and shocked.” An enquiry has been announced to investigate the matter and recommend measures to avoid any future occurrences.
Earlier, Messi had unveiled a 70-foot statue of himself in Kolkata, crafted by a 45-member team over 27 days. Due to safety concerns, the unveiling was done virtually, prompting fans to flock to the stadium in hopes of seeing him in person. Many fans were seen waving flags, chanting, and donning merchandise. “Only leaders and actors surrounded Messi. Why did they call us then?” one disheartened fan remarked, reflecting the feelings of many who believed they had been misled regarding the event.
The disappointment was palpable, especially among those who had invested significant portions of their income on tickets. An angry fan voiced their frustration, saying they had hoped to see Messi play but instead witnessed a disappointing spectacle filled with politicians and officials taking selfies instead.
Kolkata, known for its passionate football culture, is home to many devoted fans. The city typically rallies for local club matches, showcasing the deep connection people have with the sport despite cricket’s dominant status in India.
In the lead-up to the event, thousands had lined the streets outside Messi’s hotel, eager for a chance to catch a glimpse of the football star, indicating the level of anticipation leading to the unfortunate events that unfolded at the stadium.
Hitesh, a 24-year-old lawyer who traveled approximately 1,900 kilometers just to see Messi, spoke candidly about his admiration for the footballer. He described Messi’s talent as a source of inspiration, underscoring the personal significance of the experience for many fans.
To celebrate Messi’s presence in India, the ‘Hola Messi’ fan zone has been established, featuring interactive displays, trophies, and life-sized replicas, allowing fans to engage with the football legend in a more immersive way.
