In a significant shift within Meta’s leadership, Yann LeCun, the company’s Chief AI Scientist, is reportedly preparing to leave the tech giant to establish his own startup. This news emerges as CEO Mark Zuckerberg is on a mission to revamp Meta’s AI operations, indicating a period of transition for the organization.

LeCun, a celebrated figure in the field of artificial intelligence and a recipient of the prestigious Turing Award, has communicated his intentions to colleagues, stating that he plans to depart from his role in the coming months. According to insider information, he is currently navigating the early stages of fundraising for his new venture, which could signal a promising new chapter in his career.

His departure is reflective of broader challenges within Meta, which has faced a series of resignations and leadership shifts throughout the year. Notably, Vice President of AI Research Joelle Pineau also exited in May, joining the Canadian AI startup Cohere shortly after. Additionally, the company recently downsized its AI research division, laying off approximately 600 employees in an effort to cut costs, reduce bureaucratic layers, and expedite product launches.

These developments underscore a pivotal moment for Meta as it navigates its evolving strategy in AI while grappling with internal changes and external competition in the tech landscape. LeCun’s next steps will be closely watched, as he is regarded as a pioneer in the AI domain, and his new startup could potentially influence the industry’s trajectory.
