Michigan Considering Browns Offensive Coordinator Tommy Rees for Head Coach Vacancy

In recent developments, Michigan’s interest in Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has surfaced regarding the university’s head coaching vacancy. This comes after the firing of Sherrone Moore. While no official timeline for interviews has been released, Rees’s prior engagement in discussions with Penn State about their head coach position suggests he may be open to similar opportunities.

During his weekly media session, Rees addressed inquiries about potential interviews with Michigan and other programs. He emphasized that his primary focus remains on leading the Browns through the upcoming games and assisting the team’s young quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, alongside other players. Rees stated, “I’m really focused on trying to play good offensive football, get a young quarterback ready to play, and support our players.” He acknowledged the flattering nature of such interest but reiterated his commitment to his current role and the need to secure wins.

Rees, who previously served as offensive coordinator at notable institutions like Notre Dame and Alabama, joined the Browns as tight ends coach in 2024 before ascending to the role of offensive coordinator this season. He took over play-calling in Week 10 against the Jets, demonstrating his leadership amid high expectations. Last year, he was reportedly in contention for the North Carolina job, which ultimately went to Bill Belichick, and he enjoys a strong reputation in both college and NFL coaching circles.

The Browns’ coaching staff holds Rees in high regard, with receivers coach Chad O’Shea praising his intelligence, communication skills, and leadership qualities. O’Shea highlighted Rees’s ability to guide the offense through challenging times, stating, “I think that the greatest trait of a leader is how you can lead when times are tough.” Offensive line coach Mike Bloomgren also lauded Rees, describing him as a “football savant” and noting his exceptional understanding of the game.

Bloomgren remarked on Rees’s comprehensive grasp of the offensive scheme, stating, “There are so many offensive coordinators in the National Football League that think about the pass game and the pass game only.” He emphasized Rees’s ability to address various aspects of offensive strategy, including protection and run blocking.

As speculation about Rees’s future continues, the Browns are apparently keen on retaining him for the long term. Given his impressive credentials and the respect he commands within the organization, Rees’s decision on any potential job offers will likely be closely watched in the coming weeks.
