Michigan Tight End Matt Ludwig Opens Recruitment After Coach Firing

In a significant shift within the Michigan Wolverines’ recruitment landscape, four-star tight end Matt Ludwig has decided to part ways with the program following the firing of head coach Sherrone Moore. The highly-touted player from Billings, Montana, announced that he has requested his release from his letter of intent, a request that was swiftly approved by the university.

Ludwig, recognized as the top Michigan recruit in the 2026 class, indicated his intention to explore new opportunities, stating, “I requested my release from Michigan and I’m opening up my recruitment.” This decision marks a pivotal moment not just for Ludwig’s career, but also for the Wolverines as they navigate the aftermath of recent coaching changes.

Standing at an impressive 6-foot-5, Ludwig is regarded as one of the nation’s promising talents at his position, ranked as the No. 12 tight end overall for the 2026 class and the No. 242 player nationally. His departure leaves Michigan with a void in their tight end recruitment, although they still retain three-star recruit Mason Bonner, who stands tall at 6-foot-7. Bonner has the potential to evolve into a dynamic receiving threat, further adding to Michigan’s offensive arsenal.

As recruitment continues to unfold, all eyes will be on Ludwig as he weighs his options and seeks a new program where he can thrive and showcase his skills on the collegiate stage. Meanwhile, Michigan will be looking to solidify their roster and find new recruits to fill the gaps left by recent departures.
