Milei’s Approval Plummets Amid $5 Million Crypto Scandal and Economic Woes

The Argentinian president, Javier Milei, is grappling with serious political fallout as his approval ratings hit a record low since his inauguration in 2023. This decline is exacerbated by emerging allegations of a $5 million financial agreement tied to his endorsement of a contentious cryptocurrency project, $Libra, which he publicly backed last year. The controversy surrounding Milei has negatively impacted the perception of cryptocurrency throughout Argentina, thwarting the aspirations of industry advocates who previously viewed the nation as a promising landscape for digital currency development.

Milei’s pro-crypto stance and the ongoing economic struggles faced by Argentinians, amid severe austerity measures intended to combat soaring inflation and a recession, present a stark contrast. While the economy shows signs of recovery, the optimism surrounding cryptocurrency, championed by Milei, is increasingly at odds with the harsh realities experienced by many citizens. This situation has also led to a slowdown in regulatory efforts to assimilate cryptocurrencies into the mainstream financial framework.

On February 14, 2025, Milei tweeted his support for the $Libra token, describing it as a means to “boost the growth of the Argentinian economy.” Following the endorsement, the token’s value surged to $5, only to crash back down to below $1 shortly thereafter, resulting in losses for approximately 13,000 investors totaling around $250 million. Evidence presented in the media contradicts Milei’s previous assertions of having no ties to the project, indicating instead a financial arrangement that involved multiple payments to associates of the president.

The investigative report from the Argentinian outlet El Destape highlights connections between Milei and crypto lobbyist Mauricio Novelli, whose phone revealed communications between the two shortly before Milei’s promotion of $Libra. These findings have prompted growing calls for an official investigation as critics claim the president misled the public.

In the aftermath of the scandal, blockchain luminary Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum, publicly addressed the situation, emphasizing the necessity of education in the crypto space. He suggested that hosting Devconnect, a prominent Ethereum event, in Argentina could showcase the positive potential of cryptocurrency, to which Milei responded positively, framing the conference as an “honor for Argentina.”

The aftermath of Milei’s election raised hopes among crypto advocates who believed the country’s persistent economic troubles presented an ideal opportunity for the proliferation of cryptocurrency as a stable financial alternative. Organizations like Crecimiento, an advocacy group for crypto regulation and education, emerged to influence the political landscape towards more favorable conditions for digital currencies.

However, the perception of cryptocurrency in Argentina has taken a hit due to the $Libra scandal. Devconnect provided a high-profile chance for the industry to reshape its public image, attempting to highlight the constructive aspects of crypto amidst the ongoing controversy. Local initiatives aimed to bolster crypto adoption ahead of the conference, promoting businesses willing to accept cryptocurrency payments.

Finally, the Devconnect event attracted over 17,000 participants worldwide, during which Buterin denounced the unethical practices of other cryptocurrencies and underscored Argentina’s suitability for blockchain technology’s broader integration. Despite the complexities surrounding crypto’s credibility in Argentina, the economic environment is gradually shifting toward a more regulated framework, as authorities continue to develop their stance on digital currencies. The political future for Milei remains uncertain, but crypto advocates express both disappointment and determination to advance their initiatives in the aftermath of this scandal.
