Nebraska Dominates Creighton with 71-50 Win to Improve to 9-0

The matchup between Nebraska and Creighton unfolded with high stakes, as both teams sought to establish dominance in this heated rivalry. Early in the game, Nebraska’s defense set the tone, holding Creighton to just two points during the first media timeout and maintaining an impressive stranglehold on the game.

After the initial stages, Nebraska surged ahead, fueled by a 13-0 run that solidified their control over the contest. By halftime, Nebraska was leading 33-19, showcasing a strong defensive performance that limited Creighton to a mere 19% shooting from the field in the first half. This commanding presence continued throughout the game, as the Huskers eventually secured a decisive 71-50 victory.

Head Coach Fred Hoiberg praised his team’s adherence to the game plan, emphasizing the toughness and tenacity that characterized their performance. Creighton’s coach, Greg McDermott, acknowledged his team’s struggles, noting Nebraska’s physicality and connection on the court. The Bluejays fell to a 5-4 record as they grappled with Nebraska’s relentless defense.

Nebraska’s offense was led by Rienk Mast, who scored 20 points, while Sam Hoiberg and Pryce Sandfort contributed 15 and 13 points, respectively. Notably, Berke Buyuktuncel excelled on the boards with 13 rebounds. The standout performance came from Jamarques Lawrence, who recorded an astonishing +29 in his plus-minus statistic during his 27 minutes on the court.

As the second half commenced, Nebraska continued to dominate, quickly extending their lead to 45-22. Despite Creighton’s attempts to rally, they never cut the deficit below 18 points, with Nebraska finishing with a solid 50% shooting in the second half.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 9-0, marking only the third time in the school’s history that they have reached such a record, with their sights now set on matching the 10-0 start achieved during the 1977-78 season. The Huskers will face Wisconsin next, a critical matchup as they delve into Big Ten play.

Postgame discussions revealed a sense of urgency among the players, as they quickly shifted their focus from this victory to upcoming challenges. Sam Hoiberg reflected on the significance of the win against Creighton, noting a personal stake in the rivalry, having clinched a 3-1 record against them throughout his collegiate career.

The chants from the student section echoed in the arena long after the final buzzer, as the pride of a decisive victory against their rivals lingered in the air. However, with the season still unfolding, the message was clear: the march continues, and Nebraska is determined to protect their home court while striving for greater achievements in the days ahead.
