The Nebraska football team has officially secured a spot in the 2025 SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl, marking a significant achievement as the Huskers prepare for their second consecutive postseason appearance. Scheduled to take place on December 31, the matchup will feature Nebraska facing off against Utah at Allegiant Stadium, with the kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. CT (12:30 p.m. PT) and coverage provided by ESPN.
This game will be particularly noteworthy as it constitutes Nebraska’s inaugural appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl and brings their total bowl game count to 55 in school history. Entering the matchup with a solid 7-5 record, the Huskers are celebrating their fourth consecutive year of improvement in regular-season wins.
The upcoming clash marks the fifth meeting between Nebraska and Utah in a long-standing history that dates back to 1968, although the two teams haven’t faced each other since 1992. Nebraska has historically dominated the series, holding a 4-0 record against the Utes, with all previous games played at Memorial Stadium.
Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming game, highlighting the opportunity for his team to compete in a premier venue against a formidable opponent. He acknowledged Utah’s status as one of the top programs over the past two decades and emphasized the eagerness of his players to take part in what will be their 13th game of the season, hoping for a memorable bowl experience.
Notably, Nebraska initiated its 2025 campaign by battling Cincinnati at Arrowhead Stadium and achieved a victory against UCLA at the Rose Bowl earlier in November, demonstrating their capacity to compete nationally.
Director of Athletics Troy Dannen shared his excitement regarding the bowl invitation, noting that fans have passionately supported the team throughout the season, and he anticipates a vibrant Husker presence at Allegiant Stadium. The sentiment was echoed by University of Nebraska President Dr. Jeffrey Gold, who commended the team’s previous postseason success and remarked on the program’s growth under Coach Rhule.
On the opposing side, Utah boasts an impressive 10-2 record heading into the bowl game, with their two losses occurring against top competitors Texas Tech and BYU. The Utes come into the match on a strong note, having secured five consecutive victories, averaging a remarkable victory margin of 23.6 points in that stretch.
Utah’s offensive strategy is particularly noteworthy; they rank as one of the top rushing teams in the nation, averaging an impressive 269.8 rushing yards per game and 6.1 yards per carry. They also excel in total offense, ranking sixth nationally with an average of 478.6 yards per game and second in scoring offense at 41.1 points per game. Defensively, Utah is among the leaders in the nation with 14 interceptions.
Head Coach Kyle Whittingham, now in his 21st season, has established a successful program with a commendable record of 177-88, marking him as the second-longest tenured coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
