Negotiations between Northern Light Health and Anthem are ongoing this weekend, despite the contract deadline having passed early Saturday. Northern Light Health President and CEO R. Guy Hudson confirmed the absence of a new contract while assuring patients that care will continue uninterrupted for those insured by Anthem.
“In light of the current negotiations, I want to reassure our patients who are Anthem customers that they can continue to receive care with Northern Light Health, without disruption,” Hudson stated. He emphasized that patients will not be treated as out of network during this period and underscored Northern Light’s commitment to protecting the health services needed by their patients.
Anthem, recognized as Maine’s largest health insurer, has been engaged in protracted negotiations with Northern Light over the terms of their contract for several months. The ramifications of a potential breakdown in talks could be significant, with over 30,000 patients facing the prospect of Northern Light becoming an out-of-network provider. This shift could force many residents in northern and eastern Maine—who rely on Northern Light as their primary healthcare provider—to seek medical services at greater distances.
At the heart of the negotiations lies a dispute over reimbursement rates. Anthem has pressed Northern Light to reduce proposed rate increases, while Northern Light contends that higher reimbursement rates are essential for establishing a fair agreement. With the deadline now passed, both parties remain at the negotiating table, highlighting the critical nature of healthcare access for many Maine residents.
