The quest to unveil the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic creator of Bitcoin, continues to captivate the public imagination since the cryptocurrency’s inception in 2009. Despite numerous theories and names being put forward over the years, none have gained definitive traction—until now, according to a recent investigation by The New York Times.

In an extensive report, journalist John Carreyrou posits that Adam Back, a 55-year-old British cryptographer and well-known figure in the Bitcoin community, may be the elusive Nakamoto. Carreyrou’s interest was piqued while watching the HBO documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which tentatively suggested that Canadian software developer Peter Todd could be the creator. However, Carreyrou found himself unconvinced and instead focused his attention on Back, particularly noting a moment in the documentary when Back seemed visibly uncomfortable upon being asked if he was Satoshi.

Spurred by his curiosity, Carreyrou dedicated the ensuing years to uncovering any connections between Back and Satoshi. His research revealed that the Bitcoin white paper cited Back and his invention, Hashcash, which is essential for Bitcoin mining. Though this connection was not entirely new, it served as a significant piece of evidence. Carreyrou also highlighted Back’s prior discussions in the Cypherpunks mailing list, where he laid out ideas about an electronic cash system remarkably akin to Bitcoin between 1997 and 1999.

Adding another layer to his investigation, Carreyrou observed that Back had engaged actively in discussions about electronic cash but remained silent about Bitcoin until 2011, around the time when Satoshi Nakamoto seemingly vanished from the public eye. To further bolster his hypothesis, Carreyrou collaborated with Dylan Freedman, a member of The New York Times’ AI team, to analyze archives from various mailing lists, including Cypherpunks and Hashcash, spanning from 1992 to October 30, 2008. They sought similarities in writing style between Satoshi’s communications and those of potential suspects.

By examining stylistic elements like the frequency of using double spaces after sentences, common phrases, and British versus American spellings, they managed to narrow down a list of 34,000 potential candidates to just eight. Ultimately, their analysis pointed conclusively to Back as the only suspect fitting the unique usage patterns exhibited by Satoshi Nakamoto.

In response to Carreyrou’s assertions, Adam Back has refuted the notion that he is Satoshi. He stated that any similarities between his writings and those of Nakamoto are purely coincidental. He expressed that while he has been an advocate for online privacy and electronic cash for decades, he does not possess the hidden identity of Bitcoin’s creator. Back also emphasized that perhaps Nakamoto’s anonymity is beneficial for Bitcoin itself, allowing it to be regarded as a new class of asset—one that is mathematically scarce and digitally commodified.

Interestingly, Nakamoto is believed to have mined approximately 1 million Bitcoins, which now holds a staggering value in today’s market, further complicating the motives behind this unresolved mystery.
