In a heartwarming development from Sakura, Chiba Prefecture, Atsuko Sato, the well-known owner of the late Shiba Inu Kabosu, has welcomed a new addition to her family. The four-month-old female Shiba Inu, named Yuzu, has recently made her debut in Sato’s household.
The news caught the attention of local residents when a neighbor noticed Yuzu during an evening stroll near Sato’s home in late February. Describing the puppy as a small reddish-brown Shiba Inu with dark facial markings, the neighbor reported seeing her being carried by a family member. Following this observation, local media sought confirmation, and representatives close to Sato confirmed the puppy’s arrival, though Sato and her family opted for privacy regarding the adoption.
“We can confirm that Yuzu has joined the household,” stated the family representatives. “However, Atsuko and her family wish to keep this matter private for the time being. Since news of the puppy emerged, they have been inundated with direct messages and calls. They plan to share details on their own terms when they feel ready.”
As of now, no official photographs or statements from Sato have been issued. Sources indicate that Yuzu is currently undergoing early socialization and is being slowly introduced to the family’s older dogs, Neiro and Cocoro. Early interactions appear to be going well, with Neiro maintaining a respectful distance while keeping an eye on the newcomer, and Cocoro exhibiting a calm and gentle demeanor.
Local veterinarian Dr. Keiko Yamamoto, who is not directly involved with the Sato family, commented on the significance of Yuzu’s age. “Four months is a crucial time for Shiba Inu puppies. Their temperament is still developing, and a controlled environment is essential,” Yamamoto explained. “With calm introductions, most puppies can adjust well.”
Sato’s home remains in the spotlight partly due to Kabosu, whose unique appearance popularized the “Doge” meme in 2010, later becoming synonymous with cryptocurrency culture. Following Kabosu’s passing in 2024 at the age of 18, Sato has taken a step back from public life, focusing on the care of her remaining pets.
Animal welfare advocates stress that Shiba Inus are one of Japan’s most beloved breeds, yet they have witnessed a rise in surrenders in recent years. Responsible adoptions by prominent figures like Sato are viewed as a step toward enhancing awareness about the breed.
As of now, no further public comments have come from the Sato family, who continue to ask for privacy as they adjust to life with their new furry friend, Yuzu.
