In a surprising move, OpenAI has announced that it will be discontinuing its AI video generator, Sora, just six months after its noteworthy launch. The decision was communicated to users via a post on X, where the company expressed gratitude to those who engaged with the platform, acknowledging the community that formed around the video generator. “To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you,” the company stated, adding that it understands the news may be disappointing to many.
Sora was publicly introduced in late 2024 and gained significant attention following the release of Sora 2 and the stand-alone app last September. The app quickly captured the top spot in Apple’s app store, allowing users to create a variety of imaginative and often absurd videos, including scenarios featuring famous personalities and animated characters in unconventional roles. While the platform encouraged creativity, it also faced backlash due to instances of violence and racism in user-generated content, as well as concerns regarding deepfakes, misinformation, and copyright infringements.
Prior to the announcement, OpenAI had been actively working on enhancing the safety features of Sora. A blog post released shortly before the announcement, titled “Creating with Sora safely,” detailed the company’s efforts to establish stricter guardrails, aimed at limiting harmful content, including sexual material and terrorist propaganda, and addressing issues related to youth safety.
The decision to sunset Sora comes on the heels of a newly formed three-year partnership with Disney, which provided users with access to over 200 licensed characters from popular franchises like Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. In response to the shutdown, a spokesperson from Disney acknowledged OpenAI’s decision, emphasizing the importance of advancing responsibly in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. “We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it,” the spokesperson noted, indicating a willingness to engage with AI platforms in the future.
OpenAI has committed to sharing more information about the timeline for shutting down Sora and plans for users to preserve their created videos, although specifics on these details have yet to be outlined.
