The Baltimore Orioles are set to significantly enhance their lineup by finalizing a five-year, $155 million deal with Pete Alonso, the former first baseman for the New York Mets. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the agreement is in place, pending only a physical examination. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the contract will not feature any deferrals or opt-outs, with the exception of a limited no-trade clause, as highlighted by MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo. Alonso, who is represented by the Boras Corporation, is coming to the Orioles after a week that saw the team actively seeking offensive upgrades.
The acquisition of Alonso comes on the heels of another significant departure from the Mets, as Edwin Diaz signed a three-year, $69 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers just a day earlier. Alonso had engaged in discussions with the Orioles in person earlier this week, indicating strong interest from both parties. The move also reflects a broader strategy by Baltimore to enhance their roster, having previously extended a similar five-year, $150 million offer to Kyle Schwarber, who opted to return to the Philadelphia Phillies instead.
Notably, Alonso, who just turned 31, previously declined a seven-year, $158 million extension from the Mets in 2023. This decision was met with some criticism, especially since his market did not develop as he had hoped during last year’s free agency period. He ended up returning to the Mets on a two-year, $54 million contract, which included a hefty $30 million salary in 2025 and allowed him the freedom to re-enter the free-agent pool this offseason.
In total, when combining the $30 million from his Mets contract, the $20.5 million he earned during his final arbitration eligible season, and the new $155 million deal with the Orioles, Alonso will ultimately secure $205.5 million over the same seven-year span that the initially rejected extension would have covered.
More updates are expected as the details of the agreement unfold.
