A major recall has been initiated by Ajinomoto Foods North America, a supplier based in Southeast Portland, due to potential glass contamination found in one of its popular frozen products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service revealed that over 3 million pounds of frozen chicken fried rice are being removed from the market after several consumers reported disturbing incidents related to the product.
The recall specifically targets 20-ounce plastic bags of Trader Joe’s “Chicken Fried Rice,” which consists of stir-fried rice, vegetables, seasoned dark chicken meat, and eggs. These bags have been distributed to Trader Joe’s locations across the country, bearing “Best By” dates ranging from September 8 to November 17, 2026.
In addition to the Trader Joe’s product, a related item labeled as “Ajinomoto Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-style Fried Rice” was also recalled, but this product was only shipped to Canada. These items were packed in 1.53-kilogram cardboard packages containing six bags of frozen rice, with “Best Before” dates from September 9 to November 12, 2026.
The recall follows reports from four customers who discovered pieces of glass in their frozen chicken fried rice. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with these findings. Consumers are strongly advised to avoid consumption of the affected product. Instead, they should either discard it or return it to the original place of purchase for a full refund.
