In an exciting turn of events, two lucky Powerball players from Missouri and Texas emerged as winners of the lottery’s staggering $1.79 billion jackpot during Saturday night’s drawing, marking the end of a three-month streak without a grand prize winner. The winning combination of numbers was 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, with the red Powerball being 17.
Participants in the Powerball lottery faced odds of 1 in 292.2 million for a chance at the grand prize. The two winners, whose identities have not been disclosed, will split the record-breaking jackpot down the middle, each presented with the choice of either receiving an annuitized sum of $895 million over 29 years or a one-time lump sum payment of $410.3 million before taxes, as informed by Powerball officials.
The winning ticket from Texas was purchased at Big’s 103 gas station located in Fredericksburg, a rural area situated approximately 75 miles west of Austin. Meanwhile, this win marked the 33rd Powerball jackpot for Missouri, positioning it as the second-most winning state in Powerball history, just behind Indiana with 39 wins. Texas, on its part, celebrated its third jackpot win.
In addition to the jackpot winners, fifteen players matched all five white balls, securing a million-dollar payout in the process. These fortunate players hailed from various states including California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, and West Virginia.
Notably, players from Kansas and Texas who also matched the five white balls chose the Power Play option, effectively doubling their winnings to $2 million each.
This recent jackpot triumph stands as the second-largest in Powerball’s extensive history, exceeding the previous record of $1.765 billion claimed by a Californian man and his group earlier in 2023. The previous record was notably recorded ahead of Saturday’s drawing and surpassed the $526.5 million jackpot awarded to a California player back in March, further highlighting the scale of Saturday’s win.
Despite the astronomical odds stacked against players, a recent analysis indicated that individuals have better chances of becoming President of the United States, with odds standing at 1 in 32.6 million, compared to winning the Powerball.
During the three-month dry spell, numerous lottery players became millionaires after successfully matching the five white balls, yet they were thwarted from securing the jackpot due to the elusive red Powerball. Now, the winners hold the right to claim their prizes within 90 days to one year, depending on the regulations of their respective states.
The latest winnings mark the first grand prize since a ticket valued at $204.5 million was purchased in California on May 31, a prize that remains unclaimed. Meanwhile, Edwin Castro holds the title for the largest Powerball payout in history, having won a monumental $2.04 billion jackpot on November 7, 2022, opting for a lump sum payment of $997.6 million.
