In a remarkable turn of events, a Powerball player in Arkansas clinched a staggering $1.817 billion jackpot during Wednesday’s Christmas Eve drawing, marking the end of a three-month drought without a top-prize winner. The winning numbers, 04, 25, 31, 52, and 59, were drawn alongside the Powerball number, 19. This unexpected sizable jackpot resulted from final ticket sales, which exceeded previous expectations, making this win the second-largest in U.S. history and the biggest Powerball prize awarded in 2025.
Participants now have the option to choose a lump sum cash payment of $834.9 million. “Congratulations to the newest Powerball jackpot winner! This is truly an extraordinary, life-changing prize,” expressed Matt Strawn, Powerball Product Group Chair and Iowa Lottery CEO. He emphasized the significance of ticket sales, noting that the funds generated support public programs and services across the nation.
The jackpot victory ended a lengthy streak of 46 consecutive drawings without a winner, the last of which occurred on September 6, when players in Missouri and Texas shared a $1.787 billion prize. Notably, this marks only the second time a Powerball jackpot has been won by a ticket sold in Arkansas, the first instance occurring in 2010.
History was also made with this Christmas Eve drawing, as it was the first time since 2011 that a Powerball jackpot was won on this particular holiday. Additionally, the company pointed out that there have been four Powerball wins on Christmas Day, the most recent taking place in 2013.
The game’s odds, set at 1 in 292.2 million, are crafted to generate such massive jackpots, which grow in size as they roll over when no player succeeds in matching all six numbers. Lottery officials have pointed out that participants have much better chances of winning smaller prizes, creating a mix of excitement and hope among players.
In the spirit of the moment, Chris Winters, a glass artist from Indianapolis, shared his impulse decision to buy a ticket. “With the prize so high, I just bought one kind of impulsively. Why not?” he remarked on the thrilling prospect of potentially winning big.
Tickets for Powerball are available for $2 and can be purchased in 45 states, alongside Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, making it a widely played lottery game across the country.
