Purdue’s volleyball team achieved a significant milestone by defeating Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16, clinching their spot in the Elite Eight for the third time in five seasons. The Boilermakers secured the match with a scoreline of 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 29-27, demonstrating resilience against the No. 2-seed Mustangs.
Key to this victory was redshirt sophomore Bianka Lulić, who was called upon to provide crucial height at the net. After two rounds of watching from the sidelines, Lulić was substituted into the match and made an immediate impact, recording three pivotal blocks during a five-point stretch of the third set. Her performance helped shift the momentum in favor of Purdue, allowing them to take control of the match.
Lulić expressed her dedication to her team, noting, “The thought of us ending (our season) tonight… I just wanted to do my best for my teammates and my coaches.” She ended the match with five blocks and one kill, tying the fourth set at a critical moment.
The Boilermakers faced this season with high expectations after a challenging offseason, as many key players from last year’s Sweet 16 run had departed. Despite being predicted to finish seventh in the Big Ten, they surprised many by advancing deep into the tournament.
Outside hitter Kenna Wollard also played a vital role in Purdue’s success, leading the team with a remarkable 23 kills and contributing ten digs and five blocks. Her efforts not only helped the team rebound from an early set deficit but also showcased her determination to help the team achieve victory. “I really wanted to go out there and play my best,” she said.
Purdue’s defense was bolstered by setter Taylor Anderson, who recorded 49 assists along with three kills and five digs. Libero Ryan McAleer contributed significantly on defense with 23 digs, while Grace Heaney, returning from a season-ending injury last year, added 11 kills and several key blocks.
In a decisive moment of the match, senior transfer Akasha Anderson sealed the win with back-to-back kills, ensuring Purdue’s advancement to the next round. Head coach Dave Shondell praised his team’s remarkable journey, emphasizing the strong bond they’ve formed and their ability to overcome significant challenges this season.
Looking ahead, Purdue (27-6) will face top-seeded Pitt (29-4) in the next round at Fitzgerald Field House, the same venue that previously eliminated them in their most recent Elite Eight appearance. Shondell’s coaching accolades have not gone unnoticed, as SMU coach Sam Erger acknowledged him as his pick for national coach of the year, articulating the challenge posed by a Boilermakers team that has demonstrated resilience and cohesion throughout the season.
