Residents across Philadelphia, its suburbs, South Jersey, and Delaware are being invited to share their thoughts on coverage from WHYY News. This call for community input comes as local initiatives are gaining momentum, particularly one spearheaded by Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of the acclaimed sitcom “Abbott Elementary.”
Brunson is launching the Quinta Brunson Field Trip Fund in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia to provide free school trips for students. This initiative, which debuted on Giving Tuesday, aims to raise funds specifically to enable students from underserved communities to have enriching out-of-classroom experiences.
In her announcement, Brunson reflected on the profound impact that field trips had on her own education, sharing that they were among the most memorable and transformative moments of her childhood. She articulated how these experiences broadened her horizons and ignited her creativity, ultimately encouraging her to envision a future that extended beyond her immediate surroundings.
“Field trips opened my world, sparked my creativity, and helped me imagine a future beyond what I saw every day,” Brunson stated. “Going somewhere new shows you that the world is bigger and more exciting than you believe, and it can shape what you come to see as achievable.”
The newly established fund aims to alleviate the financial burdens associated with field trips for over 117,000 public school students in Philadelphia. It will prioritize access to the city’s rich array of museums and cultural landmarks, providing young learners with opportunities that they might not otherwise have.
Brunson expressed her pride in supporting Philadelphia students, emphasizing the importance of experiences that reinforce the message that their aspirations are attainable. Through this initiative, she hopes to inspire a new generation of dreamers and achievers from her hometown.
