Raiders Eye Potential Coaching Change, Consider Kevin Stefanski as Top Candidate

As the 2025 NFL season draws to a close, the Las Vegas Raiders find themselves contemplating yet another organizational overhaul. A brief resurgence marked by a four-game winning streak has offered a glimmer of hope, but many believe the team would benefit from a more extensive reset, particularly with head coach Pete Carroll at the helm. At 74, Carroll is perceived as ill-suited for the extensive rebuilding process the franchise may face. His current strategy appears focused more on immediate gains rather than long-term development, raising questions about his future with the team.

With speculation mounting, it’s suggested that Carroll should prioritize playing younger talent, regardless of veteran injuries, in hopes of positioning the Raiders for a top draft pick. Achieving this goal could enhance the appeal of the potential head coaching vacancy, making it an attractive opportunity for prospective leaders of the franchise.

One possible candidate emerging in discussions is Kevin Stefanski, the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Despite having received the NFL Coach of the Year award twice since his arrival in Cleveland in 2020, his recent track record has been far from stellar, with a dismal combined record of 6-23 over the past two seasons. Insider conversations indicate that Stefanski’s future in Cleveland may be precarious, especially in light of the team’s ongoing struggles. Some league executives suggest he could be the perfect fit for teams looking for a fresh start, particularly if the Browns decide to move in a different direction.

Stefanski’s situation has become even more convoluted following a recent loss to the Tennessee Titans. This loss has likely intensified speculation around his job security, potentially turning whispers of a change into more serious discussions.

While the current pool of coaching candidates may not offer a standout like Ben Johnson from previous seasons, the Raiders would do well to consider Stefanski. Despite his team’s poor record, he has managed to lead the Browns to multiple winning seasons and even secured a playoff victory in the last two decades, a significant achievement given the struggles of the franchise.

The challenges Stefanski has faced in Cleveland are notable. The turmoil caused by the controversial Deshaun Watson trade has plagued the team, overshadowing any positive strides made under his leadership. Comparatively, he has found himself in an environment rife with dysfunction, similar to the one in Las Vegas, yet without the historical prestige associated with the Raiders.

While Stefanski’s decisions this season have come under scrutiny, particularly concerning the handling of the team’s quarterback situation, there’s an acknowledgment that he has been operating under less than optimal conditions. His experience in managing defenses, learned from working alongside respected coaches like Mike Zimmer, suggests he may be capable of assembling a well-rounded coaching staff should he transition to a new team.

At just 43 years old, Stefanski represents a blend of experience and youthful promise, making him an intriguing option for the Raiders. If the organization opts for a candidate with a proven record who isn’t yet a coaching veteran, Stefanski could indeed serve as the ideal bridge between the current squad and its future aspirations, one that balances the pursuit of immediate victory with the long-term vision necessary to rebuild and thrive in the challenging landscape of the NFL.
