Republican Bruce Blakeman is gearing up for a political battle in New York’s 2026 gubernatorial race, sources have confirmed. The two-term Nassau County executive plans to make his formal announcement on Tuesday, adding a notable contender to a contest that is already heating up. Blakeman, having recently secured reelection in November on Long Island, is set to challenge upstate Congresswoman Elise Stefanik for the GOP nomination.
In a recent discussion with reporters, former President Donald Trump expressed his admiration for both Blakeman and Stefanik, stating, “They’re great people. We have a lot of great people with the Republican party.” Blakeman took to social media shortly after, thanking Trump for the recognition and emphasizing his commitment to lowering costs for residents, improving public safety, and prioritizing the needs of New Yorkers.
The challenge ahead for Blakeman is steep, as New York has not elected a Republican governor since George Pataki completed his third term in 2002. Incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, is seeking reelection and is facing competition from her own party’s Lieutenant Governor, Antonio Delgado. Hochul previously defeated Long Island Republican Lee Zeldin in the 2022 election.
In response to Blakeman’s announcement, Stefanik’s campaign released a statement questioning his chances, suggesting that his ambition might be overshadowing the party’s best opportunities to regain control. Spokesperson Bernadette Breslin pointed to Blakeman’s previous electoral record, claiming he has lost every statewide race over the last thirty years. Current polling also appears to favor Stefanik, as she reportedly leads Blakeman by over 50% in primary polls and holds a 20-point advantage specifically on Long Island.
The New York State Democratic Party weighed in as well, criticizing Trump’s indecision regarding endorsements. Spokesperson Addison Dick stated, “By still declining to endorse either one, Trump is ensuring that whichever of his enablers emerges from this GOP primary…will be damaged goods in a general election.”
Blakeman has been garnering attention on the national stage, largely due to his conservative policies which resonate well with his GOP base. His focus on issues such as immigration enforcement, bans on transgender athletes, and the distribution of opioid settlement funds helped him win reelection. Political analysts see his entrance into the gubernatorial race as a strategic move, motivated by the potential support from both Republicans and independents.
Political expert J.C. Polanco described Blakeman’s decision as significant, noting his popularity among Nassau County residents. Polanco explained that Blakeman’s appeal extends beyond party lines, highlighting his potential to attract independent and even Democratic voters.
As the race unfolds, all eyes will be on how both Blakeman and Stefanik position themselves leading up to the primary and the general election, against a backdrop of New York’s historically complex political landscape.
