Ripple is making significant strides in expanding its stablecoin offering, Ripple USD (RLUSD), to Africa through strategic partnerships with key players in the region, including Chipper Cash, VALR, and Yellow Card. This initiative is designed to provide African institutions with access to stable digital dollars, facilitating cross-border payments, efficient treasury management, and seamless blockchain settlements.
In a statement, Ripple highlighted Africa as a “natural next step” for RLUSD, reflecting a growing global demand among businesses looking for reliable digital currency solutions. Jack McDonald, Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, emphasized the rapid adoption of RLUSD among institutions and expressed enthusiasm about extending its availability to African partners. “We’re seeing demand from our customers globally and are excited to begin distribution in Africa,” McDonald remarked.
Ham Serunjogi, co-founder and CEO of Chipper Cash, emphasized the transformational potential of this launch for clients across Africa. “After establishing our partnership with Ripple earlier this year to support faster, cheaper, more efficient cross-border payments into Africa, we were keen to make RLUSD available as soon as possible,” Serunjogi stated.
This recent rollout aligns with Ripple’s broader strategy to enhance its presence across the African continent. Earlier this year, Ripple collaborated with Chipper Cash to integrate its Ripple Payments service, which utilizes digital assets for quick and cost-effective transfers. Furthermore, in April, Ripple engaged with Mercy Corps Ventures and nonprofit DIVA Donate in a pilot initiative aimed at supporting Kenyan herders affected by drought. As part of this effort, Ripple contributed 25,000 RLUSD, building on a previous contribution of $12,000 from Mercy Corps Ventures and Arbitrum to expand the program’s outreach.
With these initiatives, Ripple is not only diversifying its reach but also positioning itself as a key player in the growing digital finance landscape within Africa, providing essential tools for businesses and communities in the region.
