Roblox is implementing a new privacy-preserving age assurance system designed to protect its diverse user base, which includes both children and adults. The initiative aims to enhance safety for younger players while simultaneously upholding user privacy rights. This move comes amidst growing concerns over online interactions among varying age groups.
Jules Polonetsky, CEO of the Future of Privacy Forum, commented on the significance of the rollout, emphasizing that it will bolster protections for younger users. Parents will maintain control over their child’s account, with the ability to modify their child’s birthdate through the platform’s Parental Controls feature once the Facial Age Estimation process is completed. For further guidance on navigating the age verification process, users can access the Help Center.
The new age verification system facilitates the introduction of age-based chat functionalities. This feature will enable users to communicate with peers in similar age brackets, creating more age-appropriate interaction environments. The Facial Age Estimation technology will help implement these features efficiently and safely across the platform. To safeguard the youngest users, chat will be disabled by default for those under nine years old unless a parent consents to the feature post age verification. Additionally, chat functionalities will remain restricted for users under the age of 13 outside specific experiences.
Roblox has consulted with child development experts to establish practical guidelines governing interactions between users of different ages. After completing the age verification process, users will be notified of their designated age group, which ranges from under nine up to 21 and older. Users will be permitted to communicate with peers within their assigned age group and select similar age groups when appropriate.
For instance, a user named Elisa, who is estimated to be 12 years old, will be allowed to chat with users aged 15 or younger in specific experiences. Conversely, older users aged 16 and above will be barred from initiating conversations with her.
In another scenario, a user named Marcus, estimated to be 18, can chat with users aged 16 and older and may add a younger sibling to his contact list as a Trusted Connection, provided that sibling is at least 13 years old.
Recognizing the vital role that family involvement plays in the gaming experience, Roblox is introducing features that will allow users who have been age-checked and are 13 or older to chat freely with known individuals. The platform is also planning to roll out specialized solutions for direct communication between parents and children younger than 13, as well as between siblings who fall into varied age groups.
