In a troubling incident in Saint Paul, Minnesota, a mother is seeking assistance after her family’s car was allegedly stolen by an individual claiming to offer grocery delivery services amidst heightened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. The woman, who requested anonymity due to her undocumented status, spoke through an interpreter to detail her family’s plight.
The vehicle, she explained, is not just a mode of transportation but their primary source of income. It allows her and her husband to clear snow from driveways and sidewalks, a crucial service during the harsh Minnesota winters. In addition to its financial significance, the car also houses essential documents regarding her children and plans for their welfare should they face detention by ICE.
“We really want to get our car back because it’s our lifeline,” the mother emphasized, highlighting the distressing impact of the theft on her family’s day-to-day survival.
Having emigrated from Mexico five years ago, she sought better healthcare for her 8-year-old son, who has a disability. Her family also includes a 1-year-old daughter who depends on baby formula. However, with the increase in ICE operations in the area, she expressed that fear has driven her family to avoid grocery stores altogether.
Local business owner Daniel Hernandez, who assisted by interpreting her words, shared that fear is pervasive in the community. Residents are apprehensive about going out to purchase essential goods, exacerbating their vulnerabilities.
In a desperate attempt to secure necessities, the mother turned to social media, reaching out to a woman on Facebook who advertised grocery assistance. However, during the visit to her home, the individual not only took the family’s money but also seized the car keys from the garage before driving away with their vehicle. This act of betrayal has left the family feeling endangered and trapped.
“They’re very afraid that she will send immigration against us,” the mother expressed, detailing her fear of potential repercussions from reaching out for help. After attempting to contact the woman again, she reported that threats were made to involve immigration authorities.
The Saint Paul Police Department has acknowledged awareness of the incident and is currently investigating the alleged theft. Hernandez affirms the mother’s plight, describing her situation as one of desperation and extreme difficulty.
As this distressing situation unravels, community members and local advocates are encouraged to extend assistance and support to those living in fear, ensuring that families can access essential services without risking their safety.
