San Francisco police apprehended a suspect on Friday following an alarming incident involving the alleged use of a Molotov cocktail at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The disturbance also included threats made outside the company’s headquarters, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
OpenAI confirmed the event and expressed gratitude for the swift response from law enforcement, stating, “We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”
Shortly after the incident, Altman took to his personal blog to address the situation. In his post, he acknowledged the fear and anxiety surrounding the AI industry, particularly in light of a recent critical article published by Ronan Farrow and Andrew Marantz in The New Yorker.
Sharing a photo of himself with his husband, Oliver Mulherin, and their child, Altman recounted the early morning event, noting, “The first person did it last night, at 3:45 am. Thankfully it bounced off the house and no one got hurt.” He reflected on the power of words, recognizing that the timing of the article may have exacerbated tensions around public sentiment towards AI.
Despite expressing his concerns, Altman later reconsidered his choice of words, particularly the term “incendiary,” noting that it was a poor choice amidst an emotionally charged situation.
In the blog, Altman broadened the discussion to include his thoughts on the future of AI, emphasizing that the challenges posed by the industry need a societal response. “We are witnessing the largest change to society in a long time, and perhaps ever. We have to get safety right, which is not just about aligning a model; we urgently need policies to navigate through a difficult economic transition.”
He argued for the democratization of AI, insisting that critical decisions shouldn’t be concentrated in the hands of a few. Additionally, he addressed internal conflicts within OpenAI, voicing regret over decisions that have caused turmoil and promising to learn from past mistakes.
Despite the challenges, Altman expressed pride in the advancements OpenAI has made, highlighting the organization’s ability to produce powerful AI technologies and deliver services that could potentially transform society. His full blog post expands on these themes and provides additional insights into his vision for the future of artificial intelligence.
