Schools on Eastern Seaboard Announce Closings and Delays Amid Winter Storm

Officials across public and private schools along the Eastern Seaboard are proactively responding to an impending winter storm by making critical decisions regarding closures and delays for Tuesday. This follows a notable number of early dismissals taken on Monday, as the storm began to blanket the region in heavy snow, resulting in hazardous travel conditions.

As of Monday evening, winter storm warnings and weather advisories remain in effect for several states, including Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), senior meteorologist Alec Butner noted that the intensity of this snowfall is unusual for the season, prompting many schools to opt for closures on Tuesday due to concerns over unsafe travel.

In Virginia, multiple public and private educational institutions have announced school closures for Tuesday. Among those closing their doors are Amelia County Public Schools, Dinwiddie County Public Schools, Fuqua School, and Prince Edward County Public Schools.

Meanwhile, Eastern North Carolina is experiencing some delays. Beaufort County Schools, Pamlico County Schools, and Onslow County Schools have all declared two-hour delays for Tuesday, with many institutions citing transportation issues as the primary reason for modifying their schedules.

NWS meteorologists are strongly urging the public to avoid travel where possible until conditions improve. In a winter storm warning, NWS Blacksburg, Virginia, cautioned residents, stating, “Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.” They advised maintaining ample distance from other vehicles, allowing extra time for travel, and taking special care on hilly terrain and during turns. Additionally, motorists are reminded to ensure their vehicles are winterized and in proper working order.

As the storm continues to unfold, local school officials and NWS encourage everyone to stay informed and prioritize safety during this winter weather event.
