Severe winter blizzards have led to widespread travel disruption across the Upper Midwest, resulting in the cancellation of over 2,000 flights on Sunday alone. This cold snap has caused a stark shift at major airports, transforming bustling terminals into near-deserted spaces.
Data from FlightAware indicates that U.S. flight cancellations made up approximately 78% of all global cancellations on that day, with 2,216 out of about 2,842 flights canceled worldwide. Additionally, the impacts were felt throughout the air travel system, as 6,826 delays compounded the travel challenges for countless passengers.
At the heart of the disruption is Chicago, where O’Hare International Airport has been heavily affected. Reports show that nearly 27% of departing flights and 29% of incoming flights were canceled, amounting to 790 affected flights overall. O’Hare also experienced significant delays, with 839 flights affected and average wait times reaching 82 minutes.
Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has been another major site of disruption. As of Sunday, a staggering 73% of departing flights and 64% of arriving flights had been canceled, marking a substantial operational impact. The airport reported 726 cancellations, leaving just 177 on-time departures. The situation was so dire that the terminal was described as resembling a ghost town, reflecting the minimal activity and staffing in place due to the weather.
Travel disruptions extended beyond these airports. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport experienced significant turbulence, with 227 flights delayed and 87 canceled. Similarly, Denver International Airport recorded 466 delays and 60 total cancellations.
To assist travelers, most airlines have implemented travel waivers, allowing passengers to change their flights with minimal fees. United Airlines has provided options for passengers affected by the storm, enabling them to reschedule with waived change fees as long as their new flights are booked to occur between March 12 and March 20. Delta Air Lines has extended its ticket reissuance deadline, and American Airlines has confirmed that passengers can change travel plans without incurring fees if done by March 26.
As the winter storm continues to wreak havoc, passengers are advised to continuously check their airline’s website for the latest updates on flight statuses.
